Frequently Asked Questions
What is mediation?
Mediation isn’t negotiation – “If you get this, then I want this.” It isn’t court. Mediation is a productive way for people to talk about the problems that cause them stress, anger, and frustration so they can improve the situation. It is about how those with the dispute feel, as well as their experiences and viewpoints. Mediation respectfully brings those feelings and experiences into view so people can resolve their disagreements.
What kind of situations can mediation help with?
Mediation can help with any conflict or problem that has gone bad and that a citizen could use a place to talk with the other in a more productive way. Including issues like:
- Noise
- Kids not getting along or causing concerns in the neighborhood
- Parking Concerns
- Property Issues like upkeep, fences and property lines
- Business concerns
- Landlord Tenant conflicts
- Some family conflicts- parents and teens
What does a mediator do?
Mediators don’t judge or take control of people. They aren’t there to say you’re right or wrong. The mediators listen carefully and ask questions to support you as you discuss your concerns. Mediators help you ask questions, explore options and make decisions for yourself. Mediators know that you are capable of deciding how to handle your situation.
